Friday Night Music Review: Chris Ryan

There are seven words one dreads hearing from friends:

“So what do you think of my kid?”

They usually follow an artistic presentation by said child, to which the reaction 99 44/100% of the time is a forced smile and equally forced kind words.  Together these form a desperate attempt to mask ones true reaction which ranges somewhere between Simon Cowell reaching new levels of sarcasm and looking for the nearest airsick bag.  Colors, the debut EP by Chris Ryan who is the son of a beloved friend, thankfully fits in the 56/100 of one percent category.

Ryan’s style on this disc is a collection of assorted acoustic musings, recorded in sparse style with often nothing but his voice and guitar.  This can get real old real fast, but Ryan’s genuine gift for melody makes for pleasant listening.  The standout track is “Color Of Your Eyes,” which has a gentle flow and the strongest melody of the six songs presented here.

Ryan has the potential to become a hitmaker.  Give the kid a listen.

The EP is available on iTunes and at Best Buy.
