Add up the wonders
And all of the numbers that people do
So much comes to nothing
It was ten years ago today my friend’s Mom passed away. Never an occasion for celebration. Yet today, there were no tears.
They ride all their sorrows on a wave of tomorrows
Just to get them through
Then watch the tide come rushing
We chatted briefly online about different things, mostly how silly people can be as they rage against the wind for having the temerity to not ask their permission to blow. We can get so wrapped up in things that don’t matter. Oh, they seem important at the moment. But truly matter? No.
But you can lift my spirits high
Like no one has before
You’re not like this world
You’re something more
It’s not a secret handshake that binds believers together. It’s the Spirit whispering to each, bringing people who may never meet on this earth closer than brother and sister. What an indescribably rich gift this is, two becoming one in friendship, held together by and in the Savior’s love.
And you have filled my life with joy
There’s so much love around you
Your freedom has freed me too
These are precious moments to savor. Life has so many sorrows. When it contains that which is good, we should seize it and use it for all that it is worth. We know this life on this planet is fleeting. We should enjoy every moment of it there is to enjoy.
Gather the gladness in the rush hour of madness
Sell it all for a dime
Someone will come to buy it
There is so much silly trivia around us. The things so many strive for — fame, popularity, earthly success — are Halloween masks hiding the truth of their emptiness.
Make a short cut to living without any giving
And wait for a time
Someone will always try it
So many try to fill the void in their life only Christ can fill with anything but Him. They do not know their efforts are invariably doomed to failure. All that is in this world will fail you, mocking you as it does so. Only love remains. Only love truly reigns.
But you can lift my spirits high
Like no one has before
You’re not like this world
You’re something more
They say we who believe are delusional, that we chase after fairy tales. No. We know Who has come into our lives. It is the believer who knows reality, not the other way round.
And you have filled my life
With all the love that flows around you
Your freedom has freed me too
They say we are slaves to our mythology. How ironic to hear that from those who are enslaved by their ideology, one that faces eternity with no answers yet struggles with all its might to convince others that there is no reality in eternity.
On with the choices and the unhappy voices
On the telephone line
Another day to work through
Only love can heal the despair. We offer it to the as yet unknowing even as we share it with each other. It is this love enabling us to see eternity, to smile even as we acknowledge the pain of temporal loss. We grieve for those who are no longer here. Yet with quiet confidence we look forward to the certain reunion.
At the end of the maze and the spiritual haze
It will all be fine
Cause I’ve got you to come home to
We have our Lord, and we have each other. We’re good.
Real good.
