Because We Remember The Burning Coals

The complaint is often heard in conservative circles about why it seems we don’t push back against the left with the same level of personal vitriol it hurls against us.

Is it because we’re weak-willed with no stomach for a fight?

Some, yes. The faithless, godless defeatists come to mind.

But for some of us, the reason is far different.

It’s because we remember the burning coals:

If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;
if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.

In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head,
and the LORD will reward you.

We resist the temptation to lash back.

We remember there are people on the other side of the aisle. People who, like us, are but sinners saved by grace if they choose to embrace the truth found only in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We do the right thing.

No matter how much hatred is spit at us, we respond with a smile and an open hand of friendship.

It’s what we do.

It’s what we’re supposed to do.

Yet while doing this, we never yield.

We defend each other against the hatred.

We do not let our positions be dictated by polls or pundits.

We counter the lies with truth, spoken plainly and without fear.

We stand for the truth regardless of the cost.

Regardless of the opposition.

Regardless of popularity or social position.

We do this for the right reason.

The only reason.

Because we remember the burning coals.

Always.
