Friday Fractured Flickers

  • So there’s a big GOP meeting this weekend in San Jose. Saturday morning there’s a new media seminar. And am I invited? Or even notified? N-o-o-o-o. Had to read about it in the paper. HARRUMPH! I blame Romney; he’s the featured speaker.
  • The iPad went on sale today. Yes, I ordered one. Took forever to get through the Apple online store, but perseverance paid off. From now until late next month when it’s scheduled to arrive I’ll sit next to the Kindle kids on BART with a slightly condescending smile. It’s a great day to be a geek.
  • As the health care debate drags on — and is it ever a drag — it’s becoming ever clearer both sides have a point. The present plans before Congress are bloated messes that need to be junked ASAP. However, doing nothing is equally unacceptable. Time to step back and do this right. More stringent regulation of insurers requiring fair and full coverage of all; everyone buys in via taxes; government takes that money and acts as a reinsurer for the insurers in a similar fashion as it does in areas such as hurricane insurance where it provides the reserves while letting the insurers do the work of writing and administering the individual policies. Goal of greater, better coverage achieved without nearly as much bureaucratic junk.
  • Yesterday, the wife and daughter of Nevada senator and Senate majority leader Harry Reid were injured in a car accident. A sharp reminder to never personalize political differences. Calling someone every name in the book and then expressing sympathy while offering support in personal matters does not work. Period. Sharpen the ideological, philosophical and policy debate all you want. But never forget the person on the other side of the issue is in fact a person like you and I. Loved and died for by Christ as you and I. Never, ever forget this.
