Politics And Sex And Stuff Like That

Not to boast or anything, but lately I’m being followed by a trio of beautiful women.

Okay, truth. They’re all running for political office and doubtless have no idea whatsoever I exist. And the only place they’re following me is on Twitter. But hey.

Setting the silly aside, the role of sex in politics has changed in recent years. Perhaps this would be better said as it having added a category. The assorted sexual misadventures of various and sordid male politicians continues unabated. What has been included is the growing realm of attractive female politicians, or potential politicians, entering the political battleground. It does make for some interesting dynamics.

One of the heartening elements of this is how said ladies are going about their business in a proper fashion. In this, proper is defined as not using their looks in a suggestive manner, but rather as a natural part of who they are. If you’re pretty, you’re pretty. Dressing and carrying yourself in a modest manner doesn’t negate this. If anything, it enhances attractiveness. Pretty is as pretty does, my mom often said. She was right. An additional encouraging angle is how said ladies are far, far more often than not rock-solid conservatives with equally solid backbone, who are more than willing to slug it out in the brass knuckles world of politics. It’s not the most flattering of comments that these days the women are manning up better than the men. But I digress.

Also, the spiritual aspect comes into play. The aforementioned ladies — Sarah Palin, who alas doesn’t follow me here as of yet, Nikki Haley, Liz Carter, and Christine O’Donnell — are ashamed of neither the name, nor the gospel, of Jesus. It is possible for someone, male or female, to walk at least a form of the straight and narrow in terms of doing things the Miss Manners way. However, when someone is infused with the Spirit, the strength to do so, and the true reason why these things matter, comes alive in a way possible solely through faith in, and following, Christ.

The Scriptural view of making love is that it is a sacred sign; a symbol of the intense, exclusive love Christ the Bridegroom has for His bride the church. The expression “la petite mort,” which is “little death” in French, is often used to describe the ferocious nature of being in the throes of orgasm, a moment when time and space seemingly vanish. Again, there is symbolism at work; a reminder of how Christ’s incomparable love for us was so great He willingly bore our punishment by dying on the cross so that we might be reunited with Him, the barrier of sin destroyed through His death and resurrection. The believer knows these things, along with ancillary truths such as our body being a temple of the Holy Spirit, and lives accordingly.

Note the above is under the name “making love.” This is as opposed to sex, which is the world’s poor and cheap imitation of making love. Sex is like money, in that while it is meant for, and can be, used for good such as when a husband and wife use it to show their love for each other, the love of it as something used only for self-glorification is the root of much evil.

People who abuse their looks for whatever purpose — money, power, fame, ego gratification — need to be reminded that the Eye Candy Agency has only temporary employees. In politics, true beauty isn’t defined by the amount of raging hormones induced whenever someone is in person or being captured by the camera. It’s in how that person balances budgets, reduces taxes, lessens the role of government in daily lives and encourages free enterprise. I’m not a Sarah Palin fan because she’s teh hawt, although she is and that’s Todd’s good fortune. I’m a fan because of her philosophy and policy views.

True beauty neither poses nor preens. It exists without demanding to be acknowledged, praised or worshiped. It doesn’t care how it is judged, or how others judge it (he says, looking in the mirror and noting the lame temper tantrum he threw over an equally lame online beauty contest a few weeks ago, for which there is no excuse. For the temper tantrum, that is. Need to clean up that act pronto. There’s no excuse for the contest either, but that’s not my problem.)

The spiritual person looks at those who say “look at me — I’m hot!” with a simple response: no, you’re not. Sure, you might look awesome in or out of that outfit. But you’re not hot. You never will be. Not as long as you have the attitude going.

So yes, I am being followed by beautiful women. But they’re not beautiful because of their looks, wonderful though they are. They’re beautiful because their hearts, minds and souls are engaged. Without this trio, there is no beauty. None whatsoever.

None.
